Breaking Language Barriers in Healthcare: Exploring Medical Spanish Programing at UA Health Sciences.

WATCH PRESENTATION

Dr. Alejandra Zapien-Hidalgo, an Assistant Professor and the CME director in Family and Community Medicine. As an International Medical Graduate from Mexico, she has honed her expertise. She holds a Master of Public Health degree from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. She is the Director of the Bilingual Medical Spanish and Distinction Track programs at the Arizona Health Sciences.

Since 2009, Dr. Zapien-Hidalgo has worked with the UAHS Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, dedicating herself to advancing Spanish programming. Her efforts led to the creation of longitudinal Spanish programs at UA-COM-Tucson in 2015 and UA-COM-Phoenix in 2023. She also designs and facilitates tailored medical Spanish programs for Banner Health residents, addressing health disparities in Southern Arizona by enhancing communication with Spanish-speaking communities.

Beyond academia, Dr. Zapien-Hidalgo is deeply committed to community engagement and supports UAHS-OEDI initiatives to boost underrepresented student participation in healthcare careers. She is a dedicated professional with a mission to foster positive change and believes in the power of education and outreach to transform communities.
