Speaker: Roni Capin-Rivera-Ashford

About the Speaker: Roni Capin-Rivera-Ashford is an accomplished international bilingual award-winning author. Roni has the ability and natural gift to relate to children and adults in English, as well as Spanish. Over 150,000 copies of her books have been sold.

Roni was born to a pioneering Jewish family and grew up in Nogales, Arizona, on the U.S. - Mexico border. Her great-grandparents came to the U.S. as immigrants from across the ocean: France, Germany, Poland, Romania, and Russia. Roni's stories come from her childhood days growing up in the Sonoran Desert, in a bilingual, multicultural world, where she still lives and writes.

Roni was selected for the 2009 Winner of the Judy Goddard / Libraries, Ltd. Award recognized as a lifetime Arizona Children's Author.

About the presentation: In this talk, Author, Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford will discuss her book "MY TATA’S REMEDIES/LOS REMEDIOS DE MI TATA", published by Cinco Puntos Press in 2015, now a Lee and Low title, received nearly one dozen national, international and state awards. In 2016, TATA’S was selected as the book to represent the state of Arizona in the National Library of Congress’ Great Reads. TATA’S also won two 1st place awards as best bilingual picture book and best bilingual educational book from the International Latino Book Awards group.

When Roni puts her creative passion into writing, she does it with the intention of creating books that become tools to help preserve both the English and Spanish languages, along with family & cultural traditions, history and science. Her goal is to continue building bridges of acceptance, communication, diversity and self-confidence, as well as promoting the elimination of discrimination through her stories.
