Amanda Sokan, Ph.D., MHA, LL. discusses how the importance of optimizing older adults' lived experience, which requires attention to many issues, is even more daunting for LGBTQ+ older adults whose life experiences may shape or impact their openness to healthcare providers. These challenges include access to healthcare and navigating healthcare systems, including isolation, loneliness, elder abuse and mistreatment; and promoting physical and mental health. The availability of culturally competent and responsive healthcare providers and services, as well as a commitment to policies and practices that improve health outcomes for older LGBTQ+ persons, is paramount.
