This presentation will examine the role and function of cultural interpreters in providing clinical care in a cross-cultural health care setting. Most professionals are familiar with the role of language interpreters however for some there may be a lack of familiarity with cultural interpreters. Participants will explore how the patient clinical interview may be enhanced in working with cultural interpreters and its effectiveness in working with LGBTQ+ patients.
Josefina Ahumada, MSW, LCSW
Josefina is a Presbyterian Pastor on the Tohono O’Odham reservation. She received her MSW from the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2019 she retired from ASU School of Social Work after twenty years where she served as the Field Education Coordinator, Tucson Campus. Prior to ASU Josefina practiced in the Pima County public behavioral health system for over twenty-four years as a clinician and as a clinical administrator. She currently serves as an ASU social work field instructor and she is a faculty member of the UA/ASU Health Inter-professional Milagro program. She is on the board of the YWCA, the Southside Worker Center Steering Committee, ASU Advisory Board for the SIRC’s Center for Applied Behaviroal Health Policy, and the University of Arizona Advisory Board for the Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth and Families.
