Going “Back to Where I Came From”: Reflections of a 1st generation AAPI

During this presentation, Dr. Phan will review the history and current events of anti-Asian racism through the lens of a 1st generation AAPI and child of Vietnamese refugees. Examples of direct and “covert” anti-Asian racism will be discussed, from childhood experiences to those in professional settings such as health care. Attendees will learn about possible resources and opportunities to partner with the AAPI community to increase awareness and advocacy, including supporting learners in academic settings such as students and residents.

Hanna Phan, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy | The University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy | Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Ambulatory Care – Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis | Michigan Medicine, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital

Dr. Hanna Phan is a Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Michigan and Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine, with a practice focus in cystic fibrosis, at Michigan Medicine. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s. Prior to her recent return to Michigan in August 2020, Dr. Phan served as Associate Professor and Assistant Department Head, Pharmacy Practice and Science, at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, with appointments in the College of Medicine and Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center and practiced as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at Banner University Medical Center. Dr. Phan is active in various professional organizations, including completing her term as Immediate Past President of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association.
