The College of Nursing has been engaged in a process of evolving into a more inclusive and collaborative community that began in 2018. This presentation describes some of the activities that we have engaged in this process, as we continue to evolve in our journey to achieve this goal. 

Meet Our Panel

Dean Ida “Ki” Moore, Ph.D., RN, FAAN

Dr. Moore was appointed Dean of the College of Nursing in fall 2019 after serving an interim appointment in 2018. She worked to create an environment of inclusive excellence for faculty, staff, and students a College priority.  Efforts to create inclusive excellence include the “Workplace We Want” and “Healthy Environment” initiatives, meaningful recognition awards, and an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusiveness Taskforce that is an integral component of the College structure and strategic plan priority.

 

 

 

Isabel Chavez, Senior Manager of College Operations

Isabel Chavez is a Senior Manager of College Operations at the College of Nursing (CON). She holds a Master’s in Education in Educational Leadership - Higher Education from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from the University of Arizona. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona Leadership Institute. She is an integral member of the Dean’s Administrative Council and helps with special College projects, events and initiatives. She is the CON Building Manager.  She serves on the University of Arizona Health Sciences Facilities Manager Committee and the UA Building Managers Committee. From 2004 – 2020, she was a member of the UA Appointed Professionals Advisory Council; and, is a member of the University Staff Council. She serves as a UA Awards for Excellence Judge, and has served on numerous UA Student Hearing Boards. Isabel was appointed to oversee the UA Cares efforts for the College of Nursing. Isabel has dedicated her career to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for employees. From 2016-2019, she offered bi-annual Professional Development opportunities to College of Nursing Staff. She was instrumental in recently re-activating the College of Nursing’s Staff Council. She provides new staff a personal College tour. Isabel is the Co-Lead of the College of Nursing’s Re-Entry Plan Taskforce; this Taskforce created an extensive re-entry plan to include the three College of Nursing sites -- Tucson, Phoenix and Gilbert.  She is currently co-leading an effort to secure College of Nursing Faculty, Staff and Students to volunteer for the UA COVID-19 Vaccination effort. She is a member of the College of Nursing’s Workplace That We Want Taskforce; the Gap Analysis Taskforce; the Onboarding and Mentoring Taskforce; and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce

 

Dr. Cindy Rishel, Clinical Professor

Dr. Cindy Rishel, PhD, RN, OCN, NEA-BC is a Clinical Professor in the College of Nursing and has been on faculty for 10 years. Her original research/scholarly interests were in the area of pediatric hematology/oncology and BMT with a focus on end of life issues. In addition, building on her extensive organizational and nursing leadership experience, she currently has expanded her work into the area of health systems, impact of health system structure on nurse and patient outcomes as well as overall nurse well-being. She has co-taught N704, Philosophy of Nursing Science, for several years and especially enjoys exploring the intersection of philosophy and nursing practice. She has also developed the core courses for and is serving as the Specialty Coordinator for the DNP Executive Health Systems Leadership tract.

 

 

Dr. Timian Godfrey, Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Timian Godfrey is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Nursing (CON), is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, and holds certification in public health. At Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, her DNP degree studies encompassed a leadership focus with public health training at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, specializing in American Indian Healthcare. She also practices as an advanced practice nurse in emergency healthcare for tribal nations with TribalEM. Dr. Godfrey is a proud member of the Navajo Nation and is a strong advocate for increasing the presence of individuals from groups underrepresented (UR) in health profession fields. Her primary focus is creating equitable academic opportunities for students from historically marginalized populations. She is the current program director for the HRSA Arizona Nursing Inclusive Excellence scholars project and lead on an Indian Health Services award (Indians in Nursing Career Advancement Transition Scholars) aiming to increase the number of Native American nurses practicing in tribal communities. She also co-leads the UA CON Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Task Force. Additionally, she serves on the interprofessional UA Health Sciences EDI task force, the inaugural Western Institute of Nursing Diversity and Inclusion task force, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Group to promote diversity, equity and belonging in nursing research and education in the United States. Lastly, she is engaged in legislative efforts to establish a tribal-specific Arizona Health Education Center to develop health sciences education opportunities with tribal communities in Arizona.

 

Dr. Lauren Shurson, Clinical Assistant Professor

Dr. Lauren Shurson is a clinical assistant professor in the College of Nursing. She is an experienced family nurse practitioner and has experience in internal medicine and pediatrics, urgent care, gastroenterology, and obstetrics and gynecology. Most of this care has been in underserved populations, including urban poor and rural care, which inspired a keen interest in finding solutions to health inequity. Since joining the CON faculty, she has been part of the INCATS grant team, which is aimed at expanding the Native American nursing workforce prepared to improve care of native populations. She has also been part of CON efforts to improve workplace culture and was part of the Workplace That We Want and the Meaningful Recognition Taskforces.

 

 

 

José Muñoz, Senior Program Coordinator

José Muñoz is a Senior Program Coordinator at the College of Nursing who works with doctoral and graduate certificate students. He is also part of the Arizona Nursing Inclusive Excellence team and helps coordinate activities and programming to support the graduate students. Additionally, José Muñoz is the co-chair of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) Task Force, where he leads the ED&I efforts at the College of Nursing.  Before joining the College of Nursing, José held roles in Leadership and Development with Kansas Athletics. He managed the student-athlete development and leadership program, among other diversity and belonging initiatives. José's work is grounded in centering the experiences of historically underinvested communities and those with intersectional identities to achieve equity. José received a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas and has a life and wellness coach certification.  He is currently working on his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Arizona and part of the AACN Diversity Leadership Institute. He has completed fellowships with the NCAA Effective Facilitation, University of Kansas Social Justice Retreat, University of Michigan- Leading for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Certificate, and the United States Olympic Committee. He grew up in Rio Rico, AZ, and dedicated much of his time to his sport, long-distance running.
