Employees from the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System will be sharing information about the programs and services the VA offers LGBTQ+ Veterans.

The College of Nursing has been engaged in a process of evolving into a more inclusive and collaborative community that began in 2018. This presentation describes some of the activities that we have engaged in this process, as we continue to evolve in our journey to achieve this goal. 

Meet Our Panel

Steven Powers

Patrick Powers-Lake is the Patient Safety Manager and LGBT Veteran Care Coordinator at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System. He has more than 30 years of Federal Employment including his service in the Army in combat during Desert Storm. He completed his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. He serves as the co-chair of the LGBT Patient Advocacy and Education Committee and has helped SAVAHCS create thriving LGBT program. He has been a Tucson resident for 20 years with his husband, their two sons and four dogs.

 

 

 

Maggie Schaffer

Maggie Schaffer, LMSW received her master's from Arizona State University and completed her undergrad in psychology at Touro College Berlin. Maggie currently works with Veterans who have serious mental illnesses to obtain skills to integrate into the community of their choosing. Maggie is also a Special Emphasis Program Manager for LGBTQIA+ concerns.

 

 

Austin Powers

Austin Mullen, LMSW is a Social Worker at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System. He completed his Master’s in Social Work from Arizona State University and his undergraduate in Psychology at The University of Arizona. Austin currently works in Primary Care at the VA to provide care coordination and address the psychosocial needs of the patients. He is also the co-facilitator for the LGB/TGD group at the VA.

 

 

 

 

Leah Roberts

Leah Roberts, LMSW is a Social Worker at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System. She is the Women’s Health Primary Care and Transgender/Gender Diverse Program Coordinator and facilitator for the Transgender Support Group.
